Hospice Registered Nurse (RN) - Charleston, South Carolina

Position Overview

• Provide nursing care to hospice patients in accordance with South Carolina Nurse Practice Act.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care for terminally ill patients in home or inpatient hospice settings.
• Supervise hospice aides and coordinate care for patients with terminal illnesses.
• Administer medications, manage symptoms, provide education, and deliver end-of-life care.
• Work independently with minimal daily supervision.
• Communicate with patients, families, physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and community agencies.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver hands-on nursing care aligned with patient care plans and nursing standards.
• Communicate patient needs and changes to physicians; obtain and follow physician orders.
• Maintain a safe environment and teach self-care techniques.
• Assess patient condition, administer medications, and manage symptoms.
• Document clinical notes accurately to maintain patient records.
• Participate in interdisciplinary group meetings and quality improvement activities.
• Supervise LPNs and hospice aides, delegating tasks as needed.
• Coordinate care with other healthcare disciplines, agencies, and families.
• Participate in on-call duties as required.

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Strong physical assessment skills.
• Ability to apply nursing process and teaching principles.
• Excellent organizational, time management, observation, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Competency verification may be required for specialty practice.

Licensure and Certification

• Current Registered Nurse license in South Carolina or a recognized NCSBN Compact State (non-permanent SC resident).
• Current CPR certification.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license with a good driving record.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, and driving.
• Frequent lifting/moving patients; intermittent lifting up to 50 lbs; frequent pushing/pulling over 50 lbs.
• Frequent use of hand dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
• Exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous substances, and unsafe driving conditions.
• Work under stressful conditions, deadlines, irregular hours, and occasional on-call evenings/weekends.
• Requires corrected hearing and vision within normal range for patient assessment and documentation.
