Position Details

• Specialty: Medical Surgical-ICU Registered Nurse (RN)
• Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM)
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Start Date: ASAP
• Unit: Combined Med/Surg and ICU unit with 16 Med/Surg beds and 3 ICU beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Med/Surg: 1:4-6 (depending on patient acuity)
  • ICU: 1:1-3 (depending on patient acuity)
  • Mixed patient assignments possible (ICU, Med/Surg-Telemetry, Swing Bed)

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• NIHSS preferred

Experience Requirements

• Must have ICU experience
• Experience in a similar-sized facility preferred
• Pediatric experience preferred but not required
• First-time travelers accepted

Clinical Responsibilities

• Titrate drips including blood pressure medications, insulin, cardiac meds, morphine/versed for comfort care, and heparin on Med/Surg-Tele side
• Manage own cardiac patients; no dedicated monitor techs
• May assist with respiratory treatments and equipment management during emergencies
• Floating may include helping in LTC, ER, and OB units

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Medical, surgical, pediatric, skilled or acute rehab (swing bed), and ICU patients
• Common conditions: DKA, sepsis, alcohol withdrawal, hypertension/hypotension, CHF, COPD exacerbations, basic surgical patients, comfort care

Staffing & Support

• Charge nurse oversees Med/Surg and ICU areas and takes patient assignments
• Nurse aides: staffed with a CNA and unit clerk or 2 CNAs
• Respiratory therapists available (2 on days, 1 on nights)
• Hospitalists on campus 24/7 (3 hospitalists rotating weekly)
• Case manager available Monday-Friday

Scheduling & Work Environment

• Self-scheduling with guidelines; 4-week blocks posted two weeks in advance
• Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
• Holiday requirement: One major and one minor holiday per season
• Call or standby shifts may be assigned based on census and employee choice
• Scrub colors: RNs wear navy blue; CNAs wear maroon or black
• Orientation: 1 day general orientation + 1-2 days unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
