Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (OR RN)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • On-Call: Yes, up to 4 call shifts every 4 weeks
  • Weekend Requirement: Up to 1 working weekend shift every 4 weeks
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including sister units/facilities

Experience & Licensing Requirements

  • Experience: 2 years strongly preferred
  • First-timers: Accepted
  • License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) required
    • Radiation Badge (provided by agency) required
  • Trauma Level: Level 1 trauma center experience preferred
  • Preferred Skills: Scrub experience strongly preferred

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local radius: 60 miles
  • Locals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift

Facility Highlights

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% RNs, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • RNs trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Parking permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage use

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9, E-Verify)
  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
  • Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including:
    • SSN Trace
    • County, State, National Criminal checks
    • Sex Offender Registry
    • FACIS 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification (diploma/transcripts)
  • Employment application with complete work history including PTO and contract assignments
  • Proof of 2 clinical references
  • Work history verification for last 3 clinical employers

Certifications & Competencies

  • Mandatory:
    • BLS (AHA or ARC)
    • Radiation Badge (required for OR and related specialties)
    • ACLS (AHA only) required for certain units (confirm with unit)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) as required (not required for ER RNs)
    • PALS (for pediatric units except Peds OR)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) as applicable
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
    • Color Blind Testing prior to start
    • Competency exam for OR (Peds OR candidates may use regular OR competency if no pediatric experience)
    • NIH Stroke Certification (required for ER)
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Initial physical exam and annual updates attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccines with boosters if needed)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella (positive titer or vaccines with boosters if needed)
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccinations highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Sterile Processing Techs have additional lab and physical assessment requirements

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into facility system
  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge required before start
  • Radiation badge must be received before starting floor work (may orient without badge but cannot work until received)
  • All required documents and certifications must be current and valid (no certifications expiring within 30 days of start accepted)

Notes

  • Candidates with background issues may not be eligible for temp licensure/walk-through process
  • Facility approval required for licensure hits or issues
  • Candidates must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements

This position offers the opportunity to work in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with a dynamic and skilled nursing team in a Magnet designated hospital. The role requires flexibility, strong clinical skills, and adherence to rigorous compliance and certification standards.
