Registered Nurse (Med Surg) - Travel/Contract
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse
- Shift: 3x12 hour nights (18:45 - 07:15)
- Average Daily Census: 21 patients
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5 (days, nights, weekends)
- Experience Required: Minimum 1 year Med Surg experience
- First-timers Accepted: Yes
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call: No
- Floating: Yes, within scope to other Med Surg and similar units
- Block Scheduling: Not allowed to contract to block scheduling; typically can schedule 3 shifts in a row
- Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
- Licensure: Must have active Illinois RN license in hand
- Return to Office Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- ACLS, PALS may be required based on unit/specialty
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry, Rapid Response Teams
- Cardiovascular: Post Angiogram, Post MI care
- Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
- Gastrointestinal: Colostomy care, feeding tube management
- Genitourinary/Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care, PICC line management, IV starts
- Medications: Heparin, Insulin, PCA
- Neurological/Psychiatric: CVA, pre/post neurosurgery care
- Orthopedic Trauma: Preferred experience
- Surgical Drain Care: Preferred
- Respiratory: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks
- Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, wound care/wound vac
- Additional: Previous charge nurse experience and Cerner charting experience preferred
- Trauma Level: Level I trauma experience preferred

- Drug screening (9-panel) within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs
- Immunizations or proof of immunity: MMR (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella), Hepatitis B, Varicella
- TB test (2-step PPD, TSPOT, or Qgold) within 1 year
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Fit mask testing required (specific mask types accepted)
- Competency exam required for clinical candidates
- Badge photo required before start
- References: 2 professional references required for clinical candidates
Additional Notes
- Candidate must be prepared to float to other units as needed
- Scheduling flexibility discussed with manager but no block scheduling contracts
- Must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation deadlines
This opportunity is ideal for a Med Surg RN with at least 1 year of experience, comfortable working nights, and interested in a travel contract assignment in a Level I trauma, Magnet-recognized acute care hospital.
