Description
Job Opportunity: Med/Surg RN (Medical-Surgical/Ortho)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Unit: Medical-Surgical Ortho
Number of Beds: 32
Patient Ratios: 1:5
Shift: 3 shifts, 12 hours each (06:30 - 19:00)
Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd weekend
Holiday Requirement: Rotating holidays required
Call/Standby: No call or standby requirement
Floating: Rare, only to other medical/surgical units if needed
Dress Code: Navy scrubs
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS required
- RN must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation (exam covers skills learned)

Unit Details
- Common diagnoses: Medical/Surgical patients with a specialty in post-op cancer interventions (e.g., prostatectomy, mastectomy)
- RNs are required to titrate drips (heparin, lidocaine, TPN gtt)
- Charge Nurse/House Supervisor role available
- Nurse aides available sometimes, with ratios around 1:15 depending on sitter needs
- Central monitoring with RN responsible for noticing changes (telemetry available)
- No respiratory therapy equipment (vents, CPAP, BiPAP) mentioned
Orientation & Policies
- Unit-specific orientation provided
- Fingernail policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Driver’s license required at submission to verify distance
This position is ideal for RNs experienced in medical-surgical nursing with a focus on post-op cancer care, comfortable with drip titration, and able to work 12-hour shifts with weekend and holiday rotations.
