Intermediate Care Unit Nurse - Bangor, ME

Job Overview

  • Specialty: Intermediate Care Unit (PCU)
  • Location: Bangor, Maine
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Start Date: ASAP

Experience Requirements

  • Intermediate/PCU level care experience: Minimum 1 year
  • If only Med/Surg experience with some PCU: Minimum 2 years
  • Prior Travel Experience: Must have completed at least two 13-week travel assignments (i.e., prior travel experience required)

Patient Population & Care

  • Level II Trauma Center with 12 Intermediate Care beds
  • Patient types include:
    • Trauma (Level 2 trauma patients)
    • Neuro (strokes, stable craniotomies, CIWA, seizure precautions)
    • Medical/Surgical (respiratory illnesses including COVID/Flu/Pneumonia, long-term trachs with vents, respiratory failure requiring Bipap or High Flow O2, COPD exacerbation, post-op general surgery, sepsis, IV drug abuse, thyroid storm)
    • Cardiac (STEMI, NSTEMI, CHF, AFIB with RVR, post cardiac cath, post ablation, 24h post-op TAVR)

Patient Ratios

  • RN: 1:3-4 (days and nights)
  • Tech: 1:6-12 (days and nights, dependent on staffing)

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • AACCN and CCRN preferred

Clinical Skills & Competencies

  • Trauma experience required, including stroke patient care and Q2H neuro checks
  • Medical/Surgical skills: high flow O2, chest tubes, wound vac/VAC dressing changes, Bipap, drain/ostomy care, IV starts, trach care and suctioning (RT support provided)
  • Cardiac skills: temporary pacemakers, TR bands, post femoral sheath care, cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Drip management: cardiac drips (Amiodarone, Cardizem), insulin titration (travelers without insulin/cardiac drip experience will be declined)

Unit Support & Resources

  • CNA support (ratio 1:6-12)
  • Charge nurse (may have patients if needed)
  • Phlebotomy
  • Resource nurse (24/7 ICU trained)
  • Respiratory therapy (24/7)
  • Hospitalist (24/7)
  • Trauma surgery team manages own patients
  • PT/OT available Monday-Friday
  • IV/VAT team for US-guided IVs and PICC/Midline placement; RNs start their own peripheral IVs

Technology & Equipment

  • Cerner electronic charting system (highly preferred)
  • Alaris IV pumps
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system
  • GE monitors

Floating & Orientation

  • May float to ED, ICU, CCU if intermediate assignment available in those departments
  • General hospital orientation plus 1 day unit orientation

Scheduling

  • Shifts: 0700-1930 or 1900-0730
  • Weekend rotation every other weekend
  • May be placed on low census callback
  • Time off requests approved through manager
  • Holiday work varies based on unit needs

This position requires a strong background in intermediate care nursing with trauma, neuro, cardiac, and medical/surgical skills, plus prior travel experience with at least two completed 13-week assignments. Certification in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS is mandatory, with AACCN and CCRN preferred. The role offers a supportive team environment with 24/7 resources and a variety of patient types in a Level II Trauma Center setting.
