Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (LDRP) - Hettinger, North Dakota

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Department & Facility Overview

  • Department: Labor & Delivery
  • Beds: 3 Labor & Delivery, 3 Postpartum
  • C-Section OR located on the first floor (not in-unit)
  • Approximately 30 births per year (rural setting with low birth volume)

Job Responsibilities & Clinical Practice

  • Floating: RNs will float to Med-Surg about 80% of the time to take a full patient assignment if no laboring patients are present.
  • Couplet Care: Manage both mother and baby in the same room through labor, delivery, and postpartum.
  • Common Patient Types: Active labor, elective inductions, low-risk pregnancies (37 weeks+).
  • Drips: Use of Pitocin and Magnesium (Magnesium only for send-outs); RNs titrate drips per policy.

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Staffing & Support

  • No charge nurse; collaborative RN team environment.
  • No nurse aides or surgical techs available.
  • OB/Neonatologist and anesthesia available with approximately 15-minute response time (not in-house 24/7).
  • Respiratory therapy equipment limited to PRN nasal cannula during labor.
  • No tele/monitor techs; electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) uses paper charting.

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Self-scheduling with manager support from 7 AM to 7 PM.
  • Block scheduling may be considered case-by-case.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend or potentially every third weekend.
  • Holiday requirement: every other holiday.
  • May be placed on call/standby on additional shifts due to low census.

Uniform Policy

  • Scrubs of any color or pattern allowed.
  • Closed-toe shoes required.

Orientation

  • Unit-specific orientation includes 1 day and 1 night shift on the unit for acclimatization and training.
  • Shifts typically 7 PM–7 AM and 7 AM–7 PM, every other week.
  • May float to Med-Surg during orientation if needed.
