Neuro ICU Travel Nurse Opportunity - Phoenix, Arizona
Facility Overview
- Located in Phoenix, AZ, a 607-bed tertiary care center with nationally recognized medical education and research.
- Specialty programs include lung, liver, and kidney transplants.
- Affiliated with the Barrow Neurological Institute, the world’s largest neurological disease treatment and research institution, ranked #1 for neurosurgical training in the U.S.
- Teaching hospital with nursing students present.
Unit Details
- Unit: Neuro ICU
- Beds: 32
- Patient Ratios: 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
- Weekend Shifts: 4 per 4-week period
- Holidays: Work based on unit coverage/core staff rotation
- Charge Nurse: Yes (does not take patients)
- Floating: Required to float between all ICU floors and Telemetry units; tele float ratio 4:1
- Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor
- Monitoring: Phillips monitors, ventilators available
- Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 coverage
- Pharmacy: 24/7 coverage
- EMR: Cerner
Patient Population & Care
- Critical care patients with neurological diagnoses
- Procedures include craniotomies, brain tumor removals and ablations, brain biopsies, complex spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair
- Requires strong neuro assessment skills and experience with intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring
Experience & Certification Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- 3-6 months previous travel nursing experience required
- Previous travel experience specifically in ED or Neuro ICU required
- Must have experience with external ventricular drains (EVD)
- ACLS and BLS certifications required
- Cerner EMR experience required for ED and Neuro ICU
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
Additional Requirements & Notes
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must have own vehicle for travel teams
- SIMs Lab training required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
- Competency in sterile technique is mandatory; failure in SIMs Lab can result in termination
- May float to Medical-Surgical Telemetry floors
- Cannot hold concurrent contracts with other assignments
- Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- Contract length minimum: 13 weeks
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU nurses with strong critical care skills, trauma experience, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of clinical competency in a fast-paced, teaching hospital environment.
