PCU RN Position – Grand Island, Nebraska

Job Overview

  • Position: PCU RN (Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse)
  • Location: Grand Island, Nebraska
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Hours: 36 hours guaranteed per week
  • Shift Times: 0630-1900 (day), 1830-0700 (night)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: As needed to meet unit needs
  • Floating: May float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care units

Unit Details

  • Department: Stepdown (Progressive Care Unit)
  • Number of Beds: 33
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
  • CNAs: 1:10 ratio, availability fluctuates with census
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments
  • Tele/Monitor Techs: Present; RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips
  • Respiratory Equipment: BiPAP, Airvo

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Age Range: Young adults through geriatrics
  • Common Conditions: Sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, multisystem failure

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Drip Titration: Required
  • Common Drips: Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, Insulin, maintenance IV meds (non-titratable)
  • Orientation: One week classroom training plus two 12-hour shifts on the floor
  • Exam: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; 90% required to pass

Certifications & Requirements

  • Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius
  • Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
  • Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited; refusal to remove will result in contract termination

Work Environment & Culture

  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
  • Workload: Busy patient flow with simultaneous admissions, discharges, and shift change within a 6-hour window
  • Desired Attributes: Strong teamwork, friendly and positive attitude, engagement in patient experience, commitment to bedside report and hourly rounding

Additional Notes

  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
  • Unit schedulers assign traveler schedules; no self-scheduling or block scheduling
