Description

Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Specialty: Registered Nurse
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Unit: Mixed acuity surgical oncology unit (PCU and Med Surg)
  • Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Patient Diagnoses include:
    • Surgical Oncology (breast, thyroid, melanoma)
    • Hepatobiliary cancers (liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract, neuroendocrine)
    • Colorectal cancers (colon, rectal)
    • Plastics (reconstructive breast cancer, sarcoma)
  • Unit is very busy with a focus on surgical oncology care

Shift & Scheduling

  • Night shift (Day/Night option available)
  • Staffing ratio goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
  • Weekends: Variable based on unit needs
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted and balanced by management
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor

Experience & Certifications Required

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience required
  • Certifications required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • Preferred certification: ONS Chemo (Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification)

Clinical Skills & Procedures

  • Chemotherapy administration
  • Blood transfusions
  • IV antibiotics
  • Management of oncologic emergencies including cytokine release syndrome
  • Insulin and heparin drips
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
  • Computerized charting system: EPIC

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, FBI/BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific), and ongoing monthly monitoring
  • Education verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start
  • Health documents required:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start
    • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Flu vaccine or declination during flu season
  • Annual compliance training including fraud, waste, and abuse training, ethics and compliance policies, and orientation safety manual acknowledgment
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology, unit-specific competencies, and dysrhythmia/EKG exam (annual renewal required)
  • References: 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership

Additional Notes

  • Fingerprinting must be completed using Ohio-specific codes and within 1 year of start; new fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
  • Orientation and competency remediation processes are in place for failed exams
  • Dress code and hand hygiene policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with oncology and surgical care skills who are comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced, mixed acuity environment with a strong emphasis on patient safety and infection control.
