Job Opportunity: Multi Care Unit (MCU) Nurse

Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Unit: Multi Care Unit (MCU) – 10 beds, combined acuity (ICU, PCU, Med Surg)

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Level of care: All three acuities (ICU, PCU, Med Surg) within one unit, no floating between units except as noted below
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • ICU: 1:2
  • PCU: 1:4
  • Med Surg (MST): 1:5-6
  • If no nurse aide (NA), RN provides primary care at 1:3 ratio for PCU & MST patients
• Nurse Aides: NAs care for 10-15 patients; if absent, RN takes primary care for 3 patients
• Respiratory Therapy support available (vents, BiPAP, CPAP)
• Remote Monitor Techs for PCU & MST patients
• RNs responsible for 12-lead EKGs and bedside cardiac monitoring for ICU patients

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

• Medical ICU: Sepsis, suicide attempts, drug or alcohol withdrawal, COPD, respiratory arrest, pneumonia, COVID-19, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), blood pressure or heart rate abnormalities, post-op complications
• PCU: Patients on non-titratable infusions to maintain heart rate or blood pressure

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years ICU experience preferred
• May consider 1 year ICU + 1 year PCU/Med Surg experience if from larger facilities with strong skills

Skills and Responsibilities

• RNs must titrate drips (sedation, vasopressors, insulin)
• Charge Nurse oversees 50 inpatient beds including MST, Pediatrics, and MCU
• Must pass dysrhythmia exam with at least 80% within two attempts before contract signing
• Floating:

  • Float to Emergency Care MST & Pediatric units for adult MST patients
  • Float to West Campus ICU & PCU to maintain competency
  • Two-hour notice required before floating
• Dress code: Any scrub color except camouflage

Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts: 0700-1900 and 1930-0730
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Fri-Sat nights, Sat-Sun days)
• Holiday rotation to distribute holidays fairly
• Call/standby: Rotating standby shifts if census is low

Additional Requirements

• Radius rule: Must live within 50 miles
• Cannot have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit-associated facility (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year
• Cannot have worked permanently at another CommonSpirit facility within the last 12 months

Orientation

• Hospital orientation plus unit-specific orientation based on schedule and float assignments

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses comfortable with a combined acuity unit and flexible with floating to related units.
