Travel Nurse Opportunity: Med Surg Ortho Trauma (4S)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Unit: Med Tele / Ortho RN - 4th Floor North & South
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Shift Length: 12 hours
Shift Times:
- Day: 06:30 - 19:00
- Night: 18:30 - 07:00

Number of Beds: 55
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
Common Patient Diagnoses:
- Joint replacements
- Fractures
- Colon resections
- COPD exacerbation
- Prostatectomy
- Cellulitis
- Sepsis
- Ortho trauma
- GI bleeds
- Pneumonia
- Failure to thrive
Drip Titration:
- RNs required to titrate heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips
- Common drips include PCA pumps
Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments
Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio approximately 1:10-20
Tele/Monitor Techs: Present; tele techs interpret strips, RNs should have tele awareness
Scheduling & Requirements
- Contract Length: 16 weeks
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year's
- Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
- Orientation: 2 days of unit/department-specific orientation
- Block Scheduling: Limited approval available for travelers
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days per 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved
Certifications & Policies
Required Certifications:
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS preferred
Exam: RN’s must pass a 90% score on an open book skills exam during orientation (failure results in contract termination)
Driver’s License: Required at submittal to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius
Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
Scrub Color: Navy blue for RNs

- Mechanical lifts available in every other patient room
- Strong emphasis on hourly rounding and responsiveness
- Unit typically experiences multiple discharges and admissions daily
- Successful nurses are those who manage workload efficiently, have good attendance, are team players, compassionate, and patient-focused
- Patient population is culturally diverse, including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese speakers
This position offers guaranteed hours between 36-48 per week and requires flexibility with floating and holiday coverage.
