Registered Nurse (Med Surg Neuro) - Travel/Contract

Location: Decatur, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Details

• Specialty: Med Surg Neuro RN
• Shift: Nights, either 4x12 or 3x12 hour shifts (1800-0630)
• Average Daily Census: 32 patients
• Experience Required: Minimum 2 years Med/Surg experience
• First-timers: Not accepted
• Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
• On-call: Not required
• Floating: Will float as needed within scope
• Schedule Flexibility: Block schedule requests can be discussed with manager
• Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
• Licensure: Must have an active Illinois nursing license
• Return to Office Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• ACLS, PALS may be required based on unit/specialty (AHA or RQI acceptable)

Required Skills and Experience

• Work Setting: Med/Surg experience required
• Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry (remote monitoring), Rapid Response Team use
• Gastrointestinal Care: Colostomy care, feeding tube care/management
• IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Accessing ports, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care, PICC line management, starting IVs
• Medications: Experience with Heparin, Insulin, PCA (patient-controlled analgesia)
• Neurological/Psychiatric: Care for CVA, pre/post neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury; surgical drains experience required
• Respiratory Care: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks, pre/post thoracic surgery, tracheostomy management
• Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, wound care/wound vac, continuous bladder irrigation
• Electronic Health Record: Cerner experience required
• Preferred: Teaching hospital experience, Level II trauma experience

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

• Valid/current US Driver’s License or State ID
• Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, updated annually
• EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
• Illinois-specific searches including Department of Corrections, State Police registries, and Most Wanted within 30 days prior to start
• Education verification (degree/transcript/diploma)
• Primary source verification of state license and NURSYS verification
• Competency exam required for clinical candidates
• Badge photo (color, mid-shoulders up, plain background) due before start
• Signed Code of Conduct and other facility-specific documents
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
• Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
• Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
• TB questionnaire updated annually
• Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
• 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
• Two professional references required
• Skills checklist required for clinical candidates

This position is ideal for experienced Med/Surg Neuro RNs with strong clinical skills in acute care, telemetry, neurological and respiratory care, and who are comfortable working night shifts in a Level II trauma center environment.
