MedSurg/Tele Float Pool RN - Bridgeport, West Virginia

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Unit/Department

• MedSurg/Tele Float Pool
• Frequent float units:

  • 6N (36 beds)
  • 7N (29 beds)
  • Other units: 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), Critical Care (20 beds)

Nurse:Patient Ratios

• Typically 1:5-6 for both day and night shifts
• Occasionally up to 1:7 near end of shift, depending on patient acuity

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Common Patient Diagnoses

• Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
• Cardiac catheterization patients
• Chest pain
• Pneumonia
• Chronic renal disease
• COPD
• Orthopedics
• Oncology (permanent staff administer chemotherapy)

Experience Requirements

• Must pass a cardiac rhythm exam (expected to be manageable for RNs with ACLS)
• No requirement to titrate drips

Drip Management

• No drip titration required
• No set rate cardiac drips managed by float pool RNs

Charge Nurse / Supervision

• Charge nurse present on every unit
• Day shift charge nurse does not take patient assignments
• Night shift charge nurse does take patient assignments

Support Staff

• CNAs are used on all units

Respiratory Therapy Equipment

• CPAP and BiPAP available
• Respiratory Therapists (RTs) manage respiratory equipment
• Nurses are not expected to manage vents, trachs, or administer respiratory treatments

Telemetry

• Telemetry monitors (Phillips) on most units
• Monitor techs available on most units
• RNs must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips

Shifts & Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts: 7 AM - 7 PM and 7 PM - 7 AM
• Every-other-weekend requirement (Saturday/Sunday for both day and night shifts)
• Holiday shifts included in rotation with permanent staff

Float Pool Assignments

• Report to clinical coordinator before shift for unit assignment
• May float to any of the 6 units, usually assigned a "parent unit"
• Assigned basic telemetry patients within RN scope of practice
• No drip titration required while floating

Dress Code

• Royal Blue scrubs for RNs

Orientation

• 1-2 shifts orientation with a preceptor on the unit

This position is ideal for RNs comfortable with telemetry, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and working in a float pool environment across multiple med-surg and critical care units without drip titration responsibilities.
