ICU RN Opportunity - Omaha, Nebraska

Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical-Surgical ICU Registered Nurse (MS ICU RN)
  • Location: Omaha, Nebraska
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830, 1830-0630)
  • Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
  • Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation
  • Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs

Unit Information

  • Department: Medical-Surgical ICU
  • Number of Beds: 34
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • ICU: 1:1-2
    • Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 1:4-5
    • Medical-Surgical (MS): 1:5-6
  • Patient Population: Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
  • Common Diagnoses/Patient Types:
    • Neuro surgery (including neuro interventionalist with thrombectomy program; experience not required)
    • Respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke
    • Cardiogenic shock (Impella, balloon pump; experience not required)
    • Renal failure (CRRT; experience not required)
    • General surgery, psychiatric/overdose cases, GI bleeds
    • Cancer-specific surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy), internal chemotherapy administration
  • Equipment & Monitoring:
    • Respiratory therapy equipment: nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot
    • Telemetry: Draeger heart monitoring with centralized telemetry; RNs read and interpret strips (no telemetry techs)
    • Invasive lines and monitoring: CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring (training provided)
    • Other equipment: Zoll Thermoguard (hypothermia protocol), Bell Mont rapid transfuser

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years of ICU/unit experience
  • Drip Management: RNs are required to titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift; participates in Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and Codes
  • Support Staff: Patient care techs/nurse aides present at a ratio of 1:18
  • Floating: Nurses will float to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU

Policies & Requirements

  • Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination
  • Examination: RN candidates must pass a Friday orientation exam with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided); failure results in termination
  • Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify candidate is within a 50-mile radius
  • Employment Restrictions: Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
  • Return to Orientation (RTO): Required within 7 days or less from contract start; no additional RTO approvals

  • Fast-paced tertiary hospital setting with fluctuating patient volume
  • Emphasis on teamwork, critical thinking, positive attitude, and collaboration with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers
  • Manager creates schedule based on unit needs; weekend and holiday shifts required every other week or as needed
