Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract) - Newark, New Jersey

Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse

  • Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Additional Units: May float to Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as needed; other float units possible based on skill set and hospital needs (floating to be confirmed with traveler)
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2 or higher (to be confirmed with traveler)
  • Unit Size: 19 beds
  • Charting System: EPIC
  • Scrub Color: Navy Blue
  • First-time travelers: Not accepted

Experience & Skills Required

  • Minimum 2 years of PICU critical care experience required
  • At least 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (both must be documented on skills checklist)
  • Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemetry monitoring required
  • Experience with BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies required

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA required; RQI and AHA instructor cards acceptable; COCs accepted as placeholders
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): AHA required; RQI and AHA instructor cards acceptable; COCs accepted as placeholders
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Preferred but not required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for adult critical care units; check with program coordinator for unit-specific requirements

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Background Checks: Criminal background check within 30 days of start; must include all aliases and locations worked/lived in past 7 years; no open cases allowed at start
  • Drug Screen: Negative 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, MDMA, methamphetamine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP)
  • Health Documents:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
    • Physical exam within 12 months confirming clearance to perform job functions and free of communicable disease
    • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
    • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
  • Fit Testing: On-site fit test required for respirator use; must be clean-shaven unless approved accommodation is provided
  • Respiratory Medical Clearance: Required prior to start; must be updated annually
  • Color Blind Testing: Required within one year if job tasks require color discrimination; passing score required
  • Competency Exams: Medication test, dysrhythmia/EKG competency, and other relevant competency exams required within 72 hours of signing; failure policies apply
  • Skills Checklist: Must be completed and updated annually, documenting required skills and experience

Additional Requirements

  • References: Two references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment History: Resume or employment application with 7 years of work history; New Jersey candidates require verification of at least 1 year prior to start date with no gaps over 30 days
  • Mandatory Training & Attestations:
    • Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment (OSHA, HIPAA, Joint Commission)
    • Facility-specific floating policy acknowledgment
    • Vendor medical clearance form if history of positive TB
    • Influenza attestation for vaccine or exemption
    • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person portions)
    • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication exams with remediation process if needed

  • Candidates must bring all required documentation to orientation.
  • Documentation from previous RWJBarnabas Health assignments may be accepted if the gap between assignments is 30 days or less.
  • Candidates with name changes must provide proof and ensure all names are included in background checks.
  • Facility requires strict adherence to vaccination and health screening policies.
  • Floating assignments and patient ratios should be confirmed with the traveler prior to assignment start.
