Registered Nurse - Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Overview

  • Unit: 17 James Medical Oncology (12-hour Day/Night rotating shifts)
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
  • Weekend shifts variable based on unit needs
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-schedule requests submitted and balanced by management
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
  • Shift assignments (days, nights, or combination) reviewed every 4 weeks; changes based on staffing priorities
  • Floating required to other MedSurg Oncology units
  • Previous travel experience preferred

Experience & Patient Population

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience required
  • Patient age groups: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Common patient diagnoses:
    • Breast, Lung, Prostate, Pancreatic, Colon, Esophageal Cancers
    • Antineoplastic chemotherapy encounters
  • Unit cares for all solid tumor cancers across the cancer journey, including end-of-life care
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
  • Patients may have true medical-surgical issues

Required Certifications & Skills

  • Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • Telemetry interpretation and monitoring skills
  • Preferred:
    • ONS Chemo certification
  • Computerized charting experience with EPIC

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide, sex offender, MVR if driving)
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
  • Education accreditation verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, documenting good health and free of contagious disease
  • Adult Tdap vaccination (not Td or DTaP)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer
  • Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series or signed declination
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemption requires documentation
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); decliners must wear a mask
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required (at least 1 from a manager/director or formal leadership)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Unit-specific competency exams including:
    • Medication/pharmacology competency exam (required for all RN/LVN candidates)
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 1 year of start and annually thereafter (minimum passing score 76%)
  • Annual review and acknowledgement of facility policies including dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, compliance, and safety manuals
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and annually

Orientation & Training

  • First week: Day shift orientation Monday through Friday
  • Second week: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor
  • Ongoing competency and remediation processes in place for failed exams (e.g., EKG remediation course)

This position offers a dynamic oncology nursing experience with a focus on solid tumor cancers, infection prevention, and patient safety in a rotating 12-hour shift schedule. Candidates should be prepared for flexible scheduling and floating within oncology med-surg units.
