Description

Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Facility: Teaching hospital with cardiovascular surgical, peripheral vascular surgical, arrhythmias, endocarditis, CHF exacerbation, and occasional overflow patients.

Job Requirements & Expectations

  • Must be flexible with weekend shifts; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
  • Refusal to float to different units (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may result in contract termination.
  • Floating to different levels of care is required with resources and training provided.
  • May be required to cover charge nurse responsibilities with training.
  • Teaching facility: travel nurses must be willing to precept or have students shadow them.
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
  • Skill preferences: Telemetry and IV start.
  • Indiana or Compact nursing license required (must have license in hand or fingerprint application submitted).
  • Local candidates are not accepted.
  • Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at these facilities except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required for all candidates)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA only
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification)

Compliance & Competency

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required (not for Techs or RRTs)
  • Unit competency exam required
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement including HIPAA compliance
  • Completion of mandatory facility-specific modules (22 modules including Environment of Care, HIPAA, Infection Prevention, etc.) prior to orientation for RRT candidates

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start date
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Tuberculosis testing (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella (no declinations accepted)
    • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or signed declination)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended (not required)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually

Documentation & Background Checks

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background check within 90 days including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, county/state/national checks, education verification
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Official transcript or diploma required (may be pending at start)
  • Education verification by third party (may be pending at start)
  • State license verification online within 30 days of start
  • References: minimum 2 from recent employment verified within 2 years, must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
  • Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps of 30+ days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months and annually updated

Additional Notes

  • Call-in policy: missed shifts must be made up during pay period or added to end of contract depending on FTE status.
  • On-site PAPR available at Methodist and University hospitals with automatic approval.
  • On-site fit testing is a last resort and not available at certain campuses.
  • Proof of valid auto insurance required only for Hospice specialty travelers.

This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs comfortable with flexible scheduling, floating between units, and working in a teaching hospital environment with cardiovascular and critical care patient populations.
