MedSurg Nurse - 5th Floor (Martinsburg, WV)

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Unit: MedSurg - 5th Floor
• Beds: 35 (can increase to 42; includes 9 semi-private & 17 private rooms)
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6 on both day and night shifts
• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM) for both day and night
• Scheduling: Use Kronos for schedule requests; requests submitted at least 2 weeks in advance for 4 weeks at a time. Block scheduling allowed if in contract. Nights usually scheduled in blocks.
• Floating: Nurses may float to any MedSurg unit except ED or Behavioral Health
• Orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor on the floor

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

• Wide variety including altered mental status, some cardiac patients (no active chest pain), renal patients
• No hips or knees (these go to ortho)
• Cancer patients, overflow CVA, traumatic brain injury (TBI), appendectomy, chest tubes, wounds
• Wound care nurse available on days (7 AM - 7:30 PM)

Certifications & Skills

• BLS (AHA) required
• ACLS preferred
• Basic arrhythmia knowledge required; ability to recognize fatal rhythms
• No nurse's read strips required
• IV drips limited to Heparin or Protonix (no titrating or cardiac drips)

Equipment & Technology

• EMR: EPIC
• Telemetry: Yes, monitored remotely
• Ventilators: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow
• Respiratory Therapist: Available 24/7
• Pharmacy: In-house 24/7 with Omnicell
• No dedicated IV team

Work Environment & Policies

• Charge Nurse available 24/7
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holidays: Expected to work as needed based on unit needs
• Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs, navy or white jacket, white or navy undershirt; natural hair color required; excessive or distasteful tattoos must be covered

Additional Requirements

• COVID-19 Vaccine Required (2 doses Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose J&J) or approved medical/religious exemption
• Must disclose any background hits at time of submission
• Driver’s license address must be outside 50 miles from the facility
• Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years
• Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years if they stayed for 1 full year

This position offers a diverse patient population in a busy MedSurg setting with strong support from hospitalists, respiratory therapists, and pharmacy staff. Ideal for nurses comfortable with telemetry, ventilators, and a variety of medical diagnoses.
