LDRP - RN Opportunity in Winnemucca, Nevada
Job Overview
- Position: Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) Registered Nurse (RN)
- Location: Northern Nevada, Critical Access Hospital
- Shift: Nights
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Department Details
- Unit: OB - LDRP
- Beds: 4 LDRP beds, 2 Postpartum beds, 1 Exam room convertible to LDRP
- OR Suites: Adjacent OR team handles C-sections; OB nurse receives the baby
- Triage: No designated triage area; triage done in all rooms
- Birth Volume: Approximately 20 births per month, 200 per year
- Staffing: Strive to follow AWHONN guidelines; typically 2 nurses per shift, extra called in for multiple labors or sick babies
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (Advanced FHM required in Nevada to administer Cytotec)
- STABLE certification preferred
Experience & Skills
- Must have LDRP experience with ability to function in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Sick-Baby Nursery
- Minimum 1 year of true LDRP experience acceptable
- Comfortable caring for sick babies prior to transport (transport can take up to 3 hours)
- Experience with C-section newborn care (OB RN receives baby; OR team handles scrubbing, circulating, recovery)
- Ability to titrate IV drips using infusion devices (common drips: Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, Antibiotics; rare insulin use)
- Ability to read and interpret EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) strips and identify major/life-threatening rhythms
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Low risk labor (rare high-risk cases stabilized and transferred)
- Antepartum testing
- Postpartum couplets
- Well nursery and sick nursery stabilization prior to transfer
Support & Resources
- No charge nurse on unit; team approach with support from charge nurse in ER/ICU for transfers
- Nurse aides available occasionally for stocking and non-patient care tasks
- OB physician on call with ~30 minute response time; no in-house neonatologist
- Anesthesia on call after hours with quick response (~20 minutes)
- Respiratory therapy equipment available: T-pieces for PPV, Vapotherm for high flow
- Tele/Monitor techs not present; RNs read their own EFM strips; MDs can view remotely
- EMR system: Cerner Community Works; EFM system: Fetal Link
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts: 3 x 12-hour shifts (start 7:00-7:30 PM) with 30-minute lunch
- Scheduling: Modified self-schedule; flexibility required to fill staffing gaps; weekend every other week; holiday rotation possible
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating: May be asked to assist in other departments (Medical-Surgical, ER, LTC) when OB census is low, but must return for laboring patients
- Scrub color: Navy blue; hospital scrubs provided for OR cases
- Orientation: 1 day general orientation plus 1-2 shifts with preceptor on unit (including one shift on scheduled shift)

- The hospital is located in a small mountain town in north central Nevada
