Description

Registered Nurse (ICU) - Travel/Contract

Location: Fishers, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: ICU with floating to PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
  • Must be able to handle higher patient ratios and float between ICU and PCU
  • Patient types include ARDS, COPD, STEMI, NSTEMI, DKA, AKI, UTI, Acute Shock
  • ICU specialty with direct post-cardiac surgery care and cardiac cath/intervention experience required

Experience & Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of ICU nursing experience (may consider less depending on experience)
  • First-time travelers not accepted
  • Must have ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications
  • Pending license accepted if willing to obtain Indiana compact or temp license prior to start
  • Locals not accepted
  • Floating between ICU and PCU required
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Shift options:
    • 8 or 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours totaling 36 hours/week
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours totaling 48 hours/week

Clinical Skills & Special Requirements

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Obtain and interpret 12-lead EKG/ECG
  • Thermoregulation protocols (hypothermia/hyperthermia)
  • Post cardiac surgery care (directly from OR)
  • Pre/post cardiac catheterization and sheath removal
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Management of chronic/acute renal failure
  • Accessing and managing ports, arterial lines, central lines, PICC lines
  • Blood product administration
  • Starting and maintaining IVs
  • Continuous IV paralytics, neuromuscular blockade, sedation
  • Emergency medication administration
  • Procedural sedation administration and monitoring
  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Stroke (CVA) and acute stroke management
  • Hypothermia protocol (Arctic Sun)
  • Assist with BiPAP, CPAP, chest tube insertion/removal
  • Care of ventilated patients, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
  • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
  • Suctioning (ETT, NT)
  • Ventilator management
  • Infection prevention and isolation precautions (PPE use)
  • Phlebotomy
  • Care of surgical wounds with drains and wound vac

Facility & Work Environment

  • Type: Short-Term Acute Care
  • Total staffed beds: 194, 210, 153, 174 (various units)
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Scrub color: Red tops, black bottoms
  • Parking: Free

Licensing & Certification Requirements

  • ACLS (AHA or RQI accepted)
  • BLS (AHA or RQI accepted)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Pending Indiana license accepted if willing to obtain temp license before start
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, etc.)

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Background check within 90 days of start, including 7 years of residence/work history
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required (may be pending at start)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Unit competency exam required
  • Color blindness testing (Ishihara or equivalent)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (N95 or approved respirators)
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no exemptions)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no exemptions)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles
  • Employment application with full work history and explanation of gaps
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and orientation documents prior to start

Additional Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities after 11/30/24 except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers
  • Must be willing to complete all required facility-specific forms and orientation packets prior to start
  • Must be able to work holiday shifts as required

This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity patients, multiple advanced clinical skills, and flexible scheduling including floating and holiday shifts.
