Job Description
- Work in a corrections health unit specializing in Medical-Surgical Telemetry (Oncology experience preferred but not required).
- Float between various Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) units as needed.
- Ensure staff safety in a secure corrections environment.
- Unit is locked with access controlled by Corrections Officers (CO).
- CO to inmate ratio: 1:2.
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:3 for Progressive Care Unit (PCU), 1:4-5 for Medical-Surgical (MS).
- Shifts may be assigned to either MS or PCU.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit requirements.
Required Experience & Skills
- EPIC charting experience is required.
- Oncology experience preferred but not mandatory.
- Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing skills.
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including dysrhythmia interpretation and unit-based telemetry monitoring.
- IV insulin protocols.
- Feeding tube care and management.
- Pre/Post Hemodialysis and renal failure management.
- Blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, PICC line management, and IV starts.
- Management of heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), and PCA.
- Respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), ABG interpretation, oxygen delivery devices, non-invasive airway management, and tracheostomy care.
Patient Diagnoses
- Active oncology diagnoses and treatments (solid tumors, hematology).
- Oncology workup admissions.
- History of cancer admitted for other reasons (surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, abnormal labs, pneumonia).
- Non-oncology diagnoses related to above conditions.
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only (Instructor/Provider and RQI acceptable; letter of completion not accepted).

Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Education accreditation verification from recognized nursing accrediting bodies.
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start; must be completed using specific codes.
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending.
- Annual background check required by Aya Healthcare.
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment.
- Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
- Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually.
Health Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Adult Tdap vaccination required (not TD or DTaP).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer required.
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable).
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer required unless medically exempt.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed).
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (mask required if declined).
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.
Competency Exams
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exams.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%, max 3 attempts).
References and Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application required including education verification.
- Skills checklist required.
