Oncology RN Opportunity – Rapid City, South Dakota
Facility & Unit Overview
- 16 inpatient beds
- Mixed acuity PCU/IMC unit: Intermediate Care acuity, Telemetry, and MedSurg
- Patient types include oncology patients (surgical, new diagnosis, complications), medical overflow, prolonged chemotherapy infusions, and TPE patients (based on staffing)
- Patient ratio: 1 RN to 4 patients (days and nights)
Experience & Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of general nursing experience
- First-time travelers accepted if >1 year experience and must have EPIC experience
- Must live at least 100 miles from any facility in the system
- Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
Certifications & Education
- Required: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Preferred: Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Certification (required to hang chemo)
- Registered Nurse license approved by South Dakota Board of Nursing
Skills & Competencies
- Comfort with MedSurg assignments (decline if not agreeable)
- EPIC electronic health record experience required
- Experience with IMC/PCU level care, cardiac rhythm interpretation, titratable vasoactive drips, and chest port proficiency
Unit Support
- CNA ratio: 1 CNA per 8 patients
- 24/7 charge nurse coverage (rarely assigned patients)
- Phlebotomy available for peripheral draws; RNs draw from central lines
- Clinical Resource Nurse/Charge Nurse available 24/7
- Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
- Hospitalist coverage available
Equipment & Charting
- EPIC electronic health record system (required)
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Omnicell medication dispensing system
Floating
- May float to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation units
- Floating is within scope of practice and done in rotation with other travelers
Orientation
- Facility orientation provided by the health system
- Online education required
- Unit orientation includes 2 shifts with a qualified preceptor
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation every other weekend
- No on-call responsibilities
- Holiday work expected for 2 out of 4 major holidays unless prior arrangements made
- Time off: 1.5 weeks off allowed with contract extension to full 13 weeks
- No return to office (RTO) requests considered during first 3 weeks of August annually (Sturgis Bike Rally)

- Monthly audits for pre/post pain scoring with 90% compliance required
- Preferences for block scheduling or weekends can be noted but may not be guaranteed
