Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Facility: Progressive Care Unit (A5East) at a Level I Trauma Teaching Hospital


Job Details

Work Requirements

  • Must be flexible with weekend shifts; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract
  • Refusal to float to other units (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may result in contract termination
  • Floating is expected with resources provided
  • May be required to precept or have students shadow during assignment
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources

Unit Information

  • Progressive care unit focusing on cardiovascular diagnoses including:
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Post-myocardial infarction
    • Pulmonary hypertension
    • Cardiac arrhythmias
    • COPD
    • Congenital heart defects
    • Infective endocarditis
  • Care for patients post-cath lab, pre-LVAD placement, heart/lung transplants, and pre-valve replacement
  • Staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Preferred
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., TNCC, CHEMO, PALS, NRP)

Required Skills

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background checks including 7 years of history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level III
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Official transcript or diploma showing degree and graduation date
  • Education verification by 3rd party
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
  • Unit competency exam
  • Color blindness testing (Ishihara or equivalent)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season
  • References: minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles
  • Current employment application with explanation of gaps over 30 days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months and annually updated

Important Notes

  • Indiana RNs will not be allowed to work at the facility effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
  • On-site PAPR is automatically approved at Methodist and University hospitals
  • Mandatory completion of 22 required RRT modules prior to orientation for RRT candidates
  • Must complete facility-specific compliance and orientation documents prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs with cardiovascular and trauma experience who are flexible with floating and weekend shifts and comfortable working in a teaching hospital environment.
