MedSurg - Level 8 - 23 Nurse Position
Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Information
- Unit Type: Medical-Surgical
- Number of Beds: 48
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:5-7
- Nights: 1:6-8
- Common Diagnoses/Patient Types: Pneumonia, UTI, AMS, GI bleed, Alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness
Requirements & Certifications
- Must have at least 1 year of nursing experience
- BLS certification required
- Valid RN license required
- First-time travelers accepted
- Candidates must submit a copy of an unexpired driver’s license
- Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
- PCT class available to become Patient Care Technician or CNA accepted
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips with exceptions (no cardiac drip titration)
- Common drips: heparin, bumex, lasix
- Charge Nurse Coverage:
- Day shift: 2 charge nurses who take patient assignments
- Night shift: 2 charge nurses scheduled; if only 1 charge nurse, they do not take assignments
- Patient Care Techs/Aides:
- Ratio approximately 1:10-12 (may be higher)
- Duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning
Respiratory Therapy & Monitoring
- Respiratory Therapists handle breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and manage respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high flow O2)
- RNs monitor respiratory equipment but do not perform treatments
- Telemetry monitoring is done by dedicated monitor techs located on level 5
- Nurses are not required to read or interpret telemetry strips
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts:
- RNs: 7 AM to 7 PM
- CNAs: 6 AM to 6 PM
- No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule created by manager with consideration for requested time off
- Travelers expected to be flexible and help fill schedule gaps
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement:
- RNs participate in holiday rotation
- PCTs work scheduled days even if holidays fall on those days
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating: May be floated to other MedSurg units, MedSurg-Telemetry, or Intermediate Care for lower acuity patients
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation:
- 1 day with educator/computer system training
- 1 day preceptor shift
- Shift Length: 12-hour nights, weekends as scheduled
- Scrub Colors:
- RN: Navy blue
- PCT: Ceil blue
- Secretaries: Black and pink

- 50 mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions
