Travel RN Opportunity - Med Surg/Tele

Location: Denison, Iowa
Contract Length: 12 weeks

Unit & Patient Population

• 19-21 bed Critical Access Hospital Med-Surg Department
• Average census: 8-10 patients
• Patient types include telemetry, cardiac drips, post-surgical, respiratory conditions, pediatrics (1-2 times per week), wound care, ortho (hip, knee), occasional gunshot or urology cases, bronchiolitis, and skilled services
• Ortho patients common on unit
• Telemetry monitors: Mindray; RN must be able to read own strips
• Common drips: Cardizem (infrequent), insulin, heparin

Schedule & Shifts

• 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a)
• Approximately 36 hours per week
• Every other weekend required
• No call
• Self-scheduling with block schedules possible, schedules made 2 weeks in advance, sometimes 6 weeks at a time
• May float as needed (OB nurses float to MedSurg/Tele, but MedSurg/Tele RNs do not float to OB)

Experience & Certifications

• Minimum 2 years of experience in Med Surg/Tele specialty required
• Must be able to set up and use Bi-Pap (though respiratory therapists and paramedics assist)
• Ability to recognize basic cardiac rhythm strips preferred
• Prior travel experience not explicitly required
• Required certifications:

  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • PALS (AHA)

Additional Information

• Cerner experience preferred but training available for the right candidate
• Critical Access Hospital (CAH) experience highly preferred
• Orientation typically includes two shifts with a preceptor on unit
• Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5, rarely 1:6, with 3 nurses scheduled per shift
• Professional scrubs of any color allowed
• Must be located at least 50 miles from the facility (no local clinicians accepted)

This position is ideal for a Med Surg/Tele RN with solid clinical skills, comfortable working nights, and able to manage telemetry and cardiac drips in a rural hospital setting.
