Registered Nurse (OR RN) - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility Type: Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • On-call: Yes, up to 4 call shifts every 4 weeks
  • Weekend Requirement: Up to 1 weekend shift every 4 weeks
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday period (Christmas Dec 24-26, New Year's Dec 31-Jan 1)
  • Floating: May need to float within scope to like units or sister facilities
  • Experience: 2 years strongly preferred; first-time travelers accepted
  • License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • Radiation Badge (provided by agency)
  • Preferred Experience: Scrub experience
  • Trauma Level: Level 1 trauma center

  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% RNs, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • RNs trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures
  • Magnet designated, academic trauma center with cutting-edge technology
  • Total staffed beds: 820
  • Charting system: EPIC

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local radius: 60 miles
  • Locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Work Eligibility: Completed and accurate I-9 form, Driver’s License/State ID, Social Security Card
  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering last 7 years
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
    • State-specific searches (South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers)
  • Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
  • Licensure Verification:
    • Primary source verification of active, unencumbered SC RN license or compact license
    • NURSYS verification required
    • Walk-through (temporary) license process available for SC RN license if applicable
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required

Certifications & Competencies

  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • BLS (AHA or ARC)
    • Radiation Badge (for OR and related specialties)
  • Preferred/Conditional Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) for certain units
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) for pediatric units (preferred for Peds OR)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) except ER RNs
    • CHEMO certification for Oncology unit (if applicable)
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) as applicable
    • NIH Stroke Certification for ER
  • Competency Exams: Required, including medication/pharmacology competency and OR competency exams
  • Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual updates attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Vaccinations & Titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest X-ray if positive history
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
    • COVID vaccines highly preferred but not required; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start, no instant tests accepted
  • Additional for Sterile Processing Techs: Physical assessment, CMP and CBC labs required

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Orientation: Completion of First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay modules prior to start; estimated 2-6 hours depending on location
  • Badge Photo: Clear, passport-style photo required before start
  • Radiation Badge: Required for OR and related specialties; must be obtained before starting floor work
  • Emergency Response: During hurricane season (June-November), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams

This position offers a dynamic, fast-paced environment in a prestigious academic trauma center with opportunities to work across multiple surgical specialties. Candidates should be prepared for on-call duties, holiday shifts, and possible floating within the facility. Compliance with extensive credentialing, health, and safety requirements is mandatory.
