Description
Job Opportunity: Laboratory Specialist (MLS) - Travel/Contract
Location: Laurel, Maryland
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 13 weeks)
Start Date: January 5, 2026
Shift/Hours:
- 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts
- Alternating day/evening shifts (07:30-16:00 / 15:30-00:00)
- Flexibility required for shift changes if needed
- Monday through Friday, no weekends required
- Holidays required as scheduled
- No on-call required
- Floating within the department may be required
Specialty & Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
- Minimum 2 years of MLS experience required
- First-time travelers with strong experience are accepted
- Prior travel experience is not required
Licenses & Certifications
- ASCP certification required (ASCP-MLS and BLS preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred
- Other certifications (ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, STABLE, NIH Stroke, CPI) may be required depending on unit/job description
Compliance & Background Checks
- I9 or Attestation required
- Government-issued photo ID required
- E-Verify or Attestation required
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start, updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Education verification for highest level of education
- Maryland State Exclusions List check within 30 days of start
- Felonies within past 5 years are automatic decline; older felonies require review
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including Latex Screen
- Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific mask types accepted)
- Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start (instant tests not accepted)
- Immunizations/vaccinations required with proof or medical/religious exemptions as applicable:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for units working with children)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines/boosters)
- Hepatitis B (positive titer or declination; series not accepted)
- Seasonal Flu vaccine or approved exemption required for 2025-26 season
- COVID vaccine no longer required for this location but documentation collected for tracking
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (as applicable)
- Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates)
- Competency Exam (as applicable)
- Age Specific Competency Exam (required for all, including CNAs)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for most units except certain specialties)
Facility-Specific Requirements
- Passport/badge style photo with solid white/beige background
- Job description acknowledgment prior to start
- Security ID application within 72 hours of signing contract
- Confidentiality agreement signed prior to start
- Dress code review prior to start
- Latex Allergy Questionnaire completion required
- Epic Portfolio Training Test Out Form (if applicable)
Employment History & References
- Two supervisory references required within 1 year of start
- Agency application/resume completed within 30 days of start
- Verification of previous 5 years of employment history required (attestation accepted if necessary)
Additional Notes
- Floating within the department may be required
- Holidays are required as they fall and are scheduled
- No weekend or on-call duties required
