Position Details

Unit Information

• Unit: SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit)
• Number of Beds: 12
• Patient Ratios: Standard ICU ratio of 1 RN to 2 patients (may vary with acuity)
• Staffing: 1 dayshift secretary, primary RN staffing
• Equipment: Standard critical care equipment plus Impella heart pump, Hemosphere advanced monitoring platform
• Documentation System: Meditech
• Scheduling: Participative scheduling with minimum 3 weekend shifts per month; block scheduling not guaranteed; manager may move staff to fill schedule gaps
• Floating: Required to float to other units such as PCU and Medical Surgical as needed
• Dress Code: Navy scrubs required

Required Skills and Experience

• Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty (Cardiac Critical Care)
• Certifications: ACLS and BLS required; CCRN certification is a plus
• Licenses: Registered Nurse License
• Additional Certifications: NIH Certification
• Clinical Skills:

  • Cardiac critical care experience required
  • Ability to care for post open-heart surgery patients (minimum 1-2 days postop)
  • Experience with Impella heart pump and CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) is a plus
  • Respond to rapid response and code blue situations
• Procedures Performed on Unit: Intubations, CRRT, hemodynamic monitoring

Work Environment and Expectations

• Nurses are expected to explain care and medications clearly, treat patients with courtesy and respect, and respond promptly to call lights
• Designated critical care staff respond to rapid responses and codes
• Travelers are subject to floating within the facility as needed
