Unit Description

• 24 private rooms with state-of-the-art monitoring
• Nurse to patient ratio: 1:3 with clinical associate support
• Focus on medical/surgical/trauma patients
• Part of a Level 1 Trauma Center specializing in:

  • Brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic fractures
  • Complex trauma
  • Respiratory compromised patients (BiPAP management, blood gas interpretation, tracheostomies, chronic vent dependence)
  • Reconstructive plastic surgery with microvascular free flaps
  • Advanced diabetic management (Type 1 and 2)
  • General surgical interventions and complex wound management
• 11 rooms equipped with in-ceiling lifts for early patient mobilization
• Opportunities for skill enhancement for both seasoned and new graduate nurses

Patient Care

• 24-hour hemodynamic monitoring
• Trauma and general med/surg diagnoses
• Level 1 trauma center care

Staffing & Support

• Unit charge nurse present
• House supervisors available 24/7
• Night shift supervisors at unit level
• Nurse aides: typically 3 aides for 24 patients (3:8 or sometimes 1:12 ratio)
• Telemetry techs in a central location; RNs perform basic EKG interpretation

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Experience & Skills

• Strong assessment skills required
• Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment
• RNs must be able to titrate drips such as cardizem, labetalol, amiodarone (no sedative drips)
• Experience with respiratory equipment: BiPAP, CPAP, chronic or non-weaning vents

Scheduling

• Night shifts: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, weeknights and weekends
• Weekend requirement: Yes, typically every other weekend depending on staffing
• Holiday requirement: Yes, on a rotational basis
• No call or standby requirement
• Floating: Rotational basis with other unit staff, travelers included in rotation

Dress Code

• Royal blue scrubs

Orientation

• Unit-specific orientation with clinical preceptor
• Night shift orientation (7 PM - 7 AM)
• Includes weekend and holiday rotation training

Summary

This is a 13-week Stepdown RN contract in a Level 1 Trauma Center with a focus on trauma and complex medical/surgical patients. The role requires strong assessment skills, ability to titrate drips, and experience with respiratory support equipment. Night shift availability with weekend and holiday rotations is required. BLS and ACLS certifications are mandatory.
