Department: Stepdown (Progressive Care Unit)
Number of Beds: 22
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
Nurse Aide/Patient Care Tech Ratio: 1:10
Common Diagnoses/Patient Types: Heart failure, Atrial fibrillation, respiratory distress, stroke
Fast-paced unit with frequent admissions and discharges

Certifications Required

BLS (Basic Life Support)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Experience Requirements

Specialty: PCU RN (Progressive Care Unit)

Clinical Responsibilities

RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., Cardizem, amiodarone, nitroglycerin)
RNs must read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips (no tele/monitor techs reading strips for them)
Respiratory therapy equipment involvement limited to troubleshooting CPAP
Floating to ICU may be required if appropriate and experienced

Orientation & Training

1 shift (12 hours) of unit-specific orientation
Pass/fail exam during orientation requiring a 90% score to continue (open book, resources provided)

Scheduling & Shifts

Shift Times: 0630-1900 (day), 1830-0700 (night)
Scheduling: Cyclic scheduling
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: 1 major and 1 minor holiday
Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes a full patient assignment

Additional Notes

Positive attitude, teamwork, and patient-centered care are important attributes for success
Fingernail policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in termination
Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within the past year at any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
Driver’s license required at submission to verify distance compliance
