Description

Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Unit Description

  • Mixed acuity surgical oncology unit caring for PCU and Med Surg patients
  • Very busy surgical floor
  • Staffing ratio goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
  • Variable weekends based on unit needs
  • No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests allowed
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience required
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Patient Population

  • Adults and Geriatrics

Patient Diagnoses

  • Surgical Oncology: breast, thyroid, melanoma
  • Hepatobiliary cancers: liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract, neuroendocrine
  • Colorectal cancers: colon, rectal
  • Plastics: reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma

Special Procedures / Unit Details

  • Chemotherapy administration
  • Blood transfusions
  • IV antibiotics
  • Management of oncologic emergencies
  • Cytokine release syndrome
  • Insulin and heparin drips
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Preferred Certifications

  • ONS Chemo (Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification)

Charting System

  • EPIC

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing program)
  • State license verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for RNs
  • Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
  • Fingerprinting must be completed using specific Ohio codes; results must be current within 1 year or renewed if there is a break in service over 90 days

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, documenting good health and free of contagious disease
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
  • TB questionnaire required in lieu of annual TB test renewal
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer
  • Hepatitis B: titer or 3-vaccine series; declination accepted
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, THC, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); mask required if declining
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Competency Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if failed)

References & Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one from a manager or formal leadership
  • Employment application required, including education verification
  • Skills checklist required

Additional Notes

  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy must be reviewed and signed
  • Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required annually

This position is ideal for RNs with oncology and surgical experience seeking a 13-16 week travel assignment on a busy mixed acuity surgical oncology unit with a focus on chemotherapy and complex patient care.
