Job Opportunity: Ambulatory OR CST - Surgical Services
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Ambulatory Operating Room Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
- Shift Options:
- 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
- 4 shifts of 10 hours (6:30 AM - 5:00 PM)
- One late week per 4 weeks to complete cases
- Weekend Requirement: No weekends required
- On-call: No
- Floating: Possible floating within Perioperative facility within scope
- Block Scheduling: At manager's discretion
- Number of ORs: 9
- Years of Experience Required: Minimum 2 years
- Certifications Required:
- NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Radiation badge provided by parent company (if applicable)
- Experience Preferred In: Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT, Gynecology, Genitourinary, Endocrine, Surgical Oncology
- First-timers: Not accepted
- Locals Accepted: Yes, within 60 miles radius
- Guaranteed Hours: Traveler may be called off up to 10 hours per 2-week period
- Precepting: May be required to precept a care team member in the OR
- Hurricane Season Notice:
- June through November (peak in August and September)
- All employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time
- Travelers should avoid confirming new or extended assignments during hurricane season if this is a concern
Required Documentation & Compliance
Licensure & Certifications
- State License: South Carolina RN license or compact license required
- Temporary "walk-through" license option available for eligible candidates (24-48 business hours processing)
- All licensure hits must be approved by facility
- NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs and LPNs/LVNs
- Radiation Badge: Required for CSTs and certain other specialties; must be obtained before starting clinical work
- Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, required for specific units
- BLS - AHA or ARC only, required for all clinical staff
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - Required for pediatric units except Peds OR; preferred for Peds OR
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA/AAP only, full eCard with QR code required
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - Required as applicable, not required for ER RNs
- CHEMO certification - Required only for Oncology Hospital Unit
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - AWHONN or NCC acceptable
- IV Therapy Certification - Required for select LPNs
- NIH Stroke Certification - Required for ER and as applicable
- Tech Certification Verification - Required for Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists, Ultrasound Techs, Pathology Assistants, MLTs, etc.
- Competency Exams: Required, including medication/pharmacology competency and OR competency exams (Peds OR candidates without pediatric experience may use regular OR competency)
- Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
Background Checks & Verifications
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
- State-specific search for South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers
- Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
- Vaccinations:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
- COVID-19 vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Seasonal Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), or medical/religious exemption accepted (no declinations)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters may be needed for low titers
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start; annual TB questionnaire required
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
- CBC and Biochem Panel: Required for Sterile Processing Techs due to chemical exposure risk
Facility Specific Requirements
- Orientation Modules: Must be completed prior to start; estimated 2 hours on average
- Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses
- Physical Assessment for Sterile Processors: Required for Sterile Processing Techs, completed by licensed provider within 1 year of start
- Radiation Badge Process: Must be initiated and received before starting clinical work; may take 5-7 days to process
Additional Notes
- All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted with application and approved based on facility needs
- Travelers may be called off up to 10 hours per 2-week period
- Facility may assign emergency response duties during hurricane season
- Locals within 60 miles are accepted for this position
- First-time travelers are not accepted for this role
This position is ideal for experienced CSTs with at least 2 years of OR experience, holding required certifications, and comfortable with the specified shift patterns and facility requirements.
