Job Opportunity: OB/Labor & Delivery Nurse (Contract)

Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Summary

The OB/Labor & Delivery Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to patients during antepartum, labor, postpartum, newborn care, and post-surgical C-section recovery. This role requires independent clinical judgment, adherence to physician orders, nursing standards, and hospital policies. The nurse will support patients of all ages and their families throughout the childbirth process and related care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, therapeutic, and efficient nursing care for patients with multisystem diseases or treatment complications.
  • Manage nursing procedures, administer age-specific medications, and coordinate care with physicians and healthcare team members.
  • Respond to emergencies including trauma and fetal distress C-sections, providing peri-operative nursing care.
  • Deliver focused 1:1 care during labor, including interventions, comfort measures, pain relief, and labor coaching.
  • Monitor and interpret electronic fetal heart rate tracings and perform scheduled non-stress tests (NSTs).
  • Care for high-risk maternal and neonatal patients, stabilize and prepare for transfer if needed.
  • Provide breastfeeding support and education.
  • Assist physicians with bedside procedures and OB-related exams.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to CNA and housekeeping staff.
  • Conduct nursing assessments across pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, including admission assessments and documentation.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff; participate in patient care conferences and develop educational programs.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, assist in orientation of new staff and travelers, and provide leadership as needed.
  • Develop and implement nursing care plans, document patient progress, and provide shift reports.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, maintain certifications, and comply with hospital policies and dress code.
  • Take on-call duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Licensure: Must have a valid, current, full, and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska at time of submission.
  • Experience: Labor & Delivery RN experience required.
  • Certifications:
    • BLS/BCLS required until ACLS obtained.
    • ACLS, PALS, and NRP required on hire.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of nursing care principles, pharmaceuticals, and emergency response.
    • Proficient in nursing procedures and operation of medical equipment (defibrillator, suction, EKG, etc.).
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Abilities:
    • Ability to provide leadership and work cooperatively with patients, families, and healthcare team.
    • Ability to implement nursing interventions based on a wide variety of diagnoses and conditions.

Additional Requirements

  • Must have or obtain Flu vaccination.
  • Must complete ICPA background check including fingerprint submission within 1 week of offer acceptance.
  • Must be flexible to assist with patient care during low census periods.
  • Must be willing to work both Labor & Delivery and Postpartum units.
  • Must be willing to float to Medical Surgical Floor and Emergency Department as needed.
  • Primary shift will be discussed during interview.
