Description

Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) - Nights (3 shifts of 12 hours)
  • Schedule: Weekdays and some weekends
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Start and manage IVs
    • Administer medications safely
    • Monitor vitals and patient responses
    • Educate patients on treatments and self-care
    • Collaborate with care team on patient plans
    • Use EPIC EMR for charting
    • Float to lower acuity units if needed
    • Follow hospital policies and maintain patient safety

Requirements

  • Active Ohio RN license
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience
  • BCLS and IV certification required
  • EPIC EMR experience preferred
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and multitasking skills
  • Prior travel experience is a plus (not required)

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA certified (Instructor/Provider and RQI acceptable)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for certain units; check unit-specific requirements
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required for ER and related units
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required for L&D, Post-Partum, OB units
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring): Certification expiration policy differs; check unit requirements
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for most ICU, PCU, ED, and Brain & Spine units; 2-year expiration
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required for all RN/LVN candidates prior to start
  • Unit-Specific Competency Exam: Required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Required within 1 year of start and annually thereafter (minimum score 76%)

Licensure & Verification

  • State License verification required within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for RNs
  • Education must be from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, or CASN)
  • Transcript/Diploma verification required (including for foreign education)

Background & Compliance

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (including FBI and BCI fingerprinting)
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
  • Fingerprinting must be completed using specific Ohio codes; new fingerprinting required if break in service >90 days or results older than 1 year
  • Candidates must complete and sign facility-specific policies including dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, compliance, and fraud/waste/abuse training

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer
  • Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series or signed declination
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31); mask required if declined
  • COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Annual acknowledgment of orientation safety manual

This position offers a structured night shift schedule in a PCU setting with opportunities to float to lower acuity units. Candidates should be prepared for comprehensive credentialing, background checks, and health documentation in compliance with facility and state requirements.
