Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Specialty: Registered Nurse
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Unit: Acute Leukemia and Hematology (15E James)
- Shift: 12-hour day/night shifts
- No chemotherapy certification required
- Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
- Patient Diagnoses: Primarily newly diagnosed acute leukemia patients
- Staffing Ratios: Goal 1:4, can be 1:5
- Weekends: Variable based on unit needs
- Scheduling: No set/blocked schedule; self-scheduling requests accepted before finalizing
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
- No explicit prior travel experience required
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
Certifications Preferred
- ONS Chemotherapy Certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Skills Required
- Medical-Surgical/Telemetry experience
- Telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- IV therapy and phlebotomy
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- Peripheral line care and management
- PICC line management
- Starting IVs
- Computerized charting experience with EPIC
Special Focus Areas
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols
- Patient falls prevention
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, or CASN)
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific fingerprinting codes and procedures
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, documenting good health and free of contagious disease
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
- TB questionnaire required in lieu of annual TB test renewal
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions reviewed
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); mask required if declining
- COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended
Competency and Testing Requirements
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exam required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for all RNs within 1 year of start (annual renewal required except for certain exclusions)
References and Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager/director or formal leadership
- Employment application required, including education verification for nursing candidates
- Skills checklist required
Additional Facility-Specific Requirements
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment
- Confidential Fraud, Waste, Abuse, and Compliance Reporting training and acknowledgment
- Ethics and compliance policies review and acknowledgment annually
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment annually
This position offers a specialized acute leukemia and hematology nursing experience with a focus on telemetry and infection prevention, suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience and required certifications in BLS and ACLS.
