Telemetry Nurse (2 South) - Martinsburg, West Virginia

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 5 years as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Prior travel experience required: at least 1+ year of travel nursing experience
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (AHA)
    • ACLS (AHA)
    • NIHSS

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system preferred

Unit & Patient Information

  • 20 beds, all private rooms
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio:
    • 1:5 for telemetry patients
    • 1:3-4 for stepdown patients (currently telemetry only; stepdown not active)
  • Patient types: telemetry monitoring, post catheterization, medical/surgical with telemetry needs, respiratory difficulty
  • Average patient admissions/discharges vary widely (1-10 per day)

Job Responsibilities & Environment

  • Cardiac monitoring: understanding and comfort with basic dysrhythmia and telemetry strip interpretation required
  • Point of Care Testing (POCT): blood sugar testing using AccuChek glucometer
  • Nurses place IVs and draw labs from central lines if ordered
  • Nurses reconstitute antibiotics and may titrate heparin or diltiazem as needed
  • Respiratory therapists available 24/7; nurses may administer nebulizers/breathing treatments (no ventilators on unit)
  • Unit-based pharmacist available weekdays 7am-3pm; main pharmacy coverage 24/7
  • Physician coverage: hospitalist available 24/7
  • Floating: may float to comparable or lower acuity units (telemetry or med/surg); occasional assistance with boarded patients in ED or ICU

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation: 3-day process including education modules, shadowing, and independent work
  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7am-7:30pm or 7pm-7:30am)
    • Nurses hired for day or night shift; may pick up additional shifts but not required to switch permanently
    • Block scheduling and self-scheduling allowed for travelers
  • On-call: none
  • Weekend/Holiday Requirements:
    • Every other weekend required (day shift: Sat/Sun; night shift: Fri/Sat)
    • Every other major holiday rotation (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's)

Staffing & Support

  • Charge nurse designated; supports unit when fully staffed
  • 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per 20 beds assisting with ambulation, vital signs, feeding, bathing, documentation, and rounding
  • Monitor technicians located on 6th floor monitor telemetry remotely and communicate with nurses

Additional Notes

  • Nurses provide their own navy blue scrubs
  • Travelers may be asked to precept or act as charge nurse depending on comfort level; participation is voluntary and discussed beforehand
  • Driver’s license required with address outside 50 miles from facility (submission requirement)
  • Disclosure of any license issues required at time of submission
