OR Nurse Travel Job - Tacoma, Washington
Job Overview
- Specialty: Operating Room (OR) Nurse
- Location: Tacoma, Washington
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift Pattern: Four 8-hour shifts per week (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) totaling 32 hours/week
- Shift Options:
- 10-hour shifts: 6:45 AM - 5:15 PM
- 12-hour shifts: 6:45 AM - 7:15 PM or 6:45 AM - 7:15 PM (12-hr)
- Evening shift: 10:45 AM - 11:15 PM
- Night shifts: 6:45 PM - 7:15 AM (12 hrs), 10:45 PM - 7:15 AM (8 hrs)
- Night shifts are blocked when possible; no on-call for night shift positions
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of strong OR experience required
- Robotic surgery experience required (Gyn, General, Urology; using XI machine)
- First-time travelers accepted if they have strong OR experience
- Prior travel experience not required
Specialty Details
- OR Rooms: 20 total
- CVOR Rooms: 4 (approx. 10 CABG and 3 TAVR cases per week)
- Hybrid Endo/Vascular: 1 room
- Main General OR: 12 rooms (General, Neuro, Ortho, Peds, ENT, Trauma, Urology)
- Outpatient OR: 3 rooms (Women’s health, minor ortho)
- Outpatient Peds: 2 rooms (ENT and Dental; currently closed for renovations)
Patient Types & Procedures
- CVOR: CABG, TAVR, VAT, open thoracotomy, valve repairs, vascular surgeries (AV fistulas), femoral-popliteal bypass, AAA repair (open and endoscopic)
- General Surgery: Neuro (EVD placement, shunts), Ortho (total joints, ORIF), Trauma (GSW, MVA), Emergency General (appendectomies, torsions), GYN, GI, GU
- Night Shift Focus: Neuro (craniotomies), Ortho, heavy trauma (gunshot wounds, stabbings, MVAs), emergency general surgeries; must be comfortable with blood administration and assisting with arterial lines and wound vacs
- Pediatrics: Not required to scrub; pediatric call team available but not mandatory
- No Transplants, Burns, or Adult Ophthalmology cases
Certifications & Skills
- Required Certification: BLS
- Skills:
- CST: Surgical techs must scrub
- RN: Scrub and/or circulate
- Comfortable with blood administration (Belmont/Intraoperative blood salvage)
- Assisting with arterial lines and wound vacs
Scheduling & Time Off
- Shift Lengths: 8, 10, or 12 hours
- Response Time: 30 minutes for call
- Time Off: Able to approve up to 5 days off; additional time off requires manager approval
- Must be willing to extend assignment if unable to meet scheduled hours
On-Call & Call Teams
- Main OR travelers: Assigned to trauma call team unless strong CVOR or pediatric skillset
- Trauma Call Team:
- RN: ~3 shifts per 6-week schedule (any days)
- CST: 5 call shifts per 6-week schedule
- Call shifts either 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM
- Heart Call Team (CVOR):
- 1 shift/week and 1 weekend per 6-week schedule
- Night shifts Mon-Thurs 5:00 PM - 7:00 AM
- Weekend shifts Fri 3:00 PM - Mon 7:00 AM
- Pediatric Call Team:
- 1 shift/week and 1 weekend per 6-week schedule
- Night shifts Mon-Thurs 5:00 PM - 7:00 AM
- Weekend shifts Fri 5:00 PM - Mon 7:00 AM

Additional Notes
- All CVOR RNs/ORTs expected to float to General Surgery
- No designated sleep room for call; must arrange with management if needed
- Top busy service lines: General Surgery Robotics, General Surgery, Orthopedics, followed by Trauma and Neuro
