Description
Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a corrections health unit serving Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections inmates.
- Float between Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) units and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) as needed.
- Ensure staff safety in a secure, locked corrections environment with controlled access by Corrections Officers.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3 in PCU, 1:4-5 in MS.
- Some shifts assigned to MS, others to PCU.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
- Shift types may include days, nights, or rotating 12-hour shifts, with scheduling reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to change based on staffing priorities.

- Medical-Surgical and telemetry skills needed.
- Ability to interpret and manage dysrhythmias and perform unit-based telemetry monitoring.
- Experience with IV therapy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line and PICC line care, and starting IVs.
- Familiarity with respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy management, and non-invasive airway management.
- Knowledge of endocrine/metabolic protocols (IV insulin), gastrointestinal feeding tube care, and renal failure management including pre/post hemodialysis care.
- Medication management including heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), and PCA.
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA Instructor/Provider or RQI acceptable (letter of completion not accepted).
- ACLS may be required depending on unit (check unit-specific requirements).
- Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, EFM) but not specified for this role.
Systems & Equipment
- Documentation System: EPIC (required).
- Medication System: Pyxis.
Patient Population
- Patients with active oncology diagnoses and treatments (solid tumors, hematology) as well as oncology workup admissions.
- Patients with history of cancer admitted for other reasons (surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, abnormal labs, pneumonia).
- Non-oncology diagnoses as listed above.
Work Environment
- Locked corrections unit with a Corrections Officer to inmate ratio of 1:2.
- Safety protocols in place for working in a secure environment.
Compliance & Background Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required.
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific Ohio codes for fingerprinting.
- Education verification from accredited nursing programs required.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12, Tdap required)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption possible)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
- Annual background checks and compliance training may be required.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required annually.
Summary
This is a 16-week travel contract for a Registered Nurse with strong EPIC charting skills, preferably with oncology experience, to work nights in a secure corrections health unit in Columbus, Ohio. The role requires flexibility to float between PCU and Medical-Surgical oncology units, working with a complex patient population including oncology and non-oncology diagnoses.
