Job Summary: Surgical Services Travel/Contract Position
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Surgical Services
- Required Years of Experience: 2 years
- Prior Travel Experience: Not accepted for first-timers (i.e., prior travel experience required)
- Types of Cases: Cardiovascular (CV), Heart/Lung Transplant
- Weekend Requirement: 1 full weekend within a 6-week call schedule
- On-Call Requirement: Approximately 110 calls
- National Certification Required: NBSTA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
- BLS Certification: Required (AHA or RQI accepted)
- State License: Indiana RN license required (pending state license not accepted)
- Locals Accepted: Yes
- Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Shift Options:
- 8 and 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week
- 3 shifts of 12 hours totaling 36 hours/week
- 4 shifts of 12 hours totaling 48 hours/week
- Block Schedule: To be discussed
Job Requirements & Qualifications
- Ability to receive pump lines from perfusion and prepare them for cannulation
- Must hold NBSTA certification before start
- Must have at least 2 years of surgical services experience, specifically in CV and heart/lung transplant cases
- Prior travel experience required; first-time travelers not accepted
- Must be able to work weekends and on-call as specified
- Must comply with hospital’s holiday work requirements

Certifications & Competencies Required
- NBSTA certification (mandatory)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (verify per cost center)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (verify per cost center)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA NRP only
- Chemotherapy certification (if applicable)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) (if applicable)
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) (if applicable)
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (not required for Techs or RRTs)
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, 100% minimum score)
- Unit Competency Exam
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement including HIPAA
- State License Verification (within 30 days before start)
- NIH Stroke Certification (if applicable)
- Technology Certification Verification (national, within 30 days of start)
Health & Background Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background Check within 90 days of start, including:
- 7 years residence/work history
- SSN Trace
- County, Statewide, National Sex Offender checks
- FACIS Level III
- Education Verification
- International search if lived/worked outside US in last 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
- Physical Exam within 12 months of start
- Fit Mask Test within 12 months of start (specific approved respirators required)
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 season (no declinations accepted)
- Negative 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start (includes Amphetamines, Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates, PCP)
- TB Questionnaire updated annually
History & Documentation
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years
- Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days
- Skills Checklist completed within 12 months and annually thereafter
- Application must cover 7 years of history with all gaps accounted for
Additional Notes
- Indiana RN travelers in Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN roles are exempt from the Indiana RN restriction effective 11/30/24
- Must complete mandatory facility-specific orientation modules prior to start (22 modules including Environment of Care, HIPAA, Infection Prevention, etc.)
- On-site Fit Testing is a last resort and limited to certain campuses
- PAPR available on-site but requires prior facility approval except at Methodist and University campuses where it is automatically approved
This position is ideal for experienced Surgical Services professionals with cardiovascular and transplant case experience who have prior travel contract experience and hold the required certifications.
