Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Transplant OR RN)

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Transplant Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Required Years of Experience: 2 years of strong transplant experience (Liver transplant experience is a hard requirement)
  • First Timers Accepted: Yes, if they have 2 years of strong transplant experience
  • Call Requirement: Yes, 40-60 hours per 6-week period
  • Float Requirement: Yes, multi-specialty including all surgeries
  • Shift Options:
    • 8 and 10 hour shifts (40 hours/week)
    • 3 twelve-hour shifts (36 hours/week)
    • 4 twelve-hour shifts (48 hours/week)
  • Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Licensing: Must have Indiana RN license, temporary license, or compact license at time of start
  • Local Travelers: Accepted

Unit Information

  • Focus on abdominal transplants: Kidney, Pancreas, Liver, Intestinal/Multi-visceral
  • Pediatric transplants are not included for travelers

Facility Type

  • Short-Term Acute Care

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • Regulatory Charting for Transplants
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) - AHA only
  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy) - as applicable
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as applicable
  • NIH Stroke Certification - as applicable
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (HIPAA)
  • State License Verification (within 30 days before start)

Required Competencies

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, minimum 100%)
  • Unit Competency Exam

Health and Background Requirements

  • Physical Exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test within 12 months (approved respirators only)
  • Negative 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months
  • Immunizations and Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
    • TB Test (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT within 1 year)
    • Rubeola (Measles): Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Mumps: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations or history accepted)
  • Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 season (no declinations accepted)
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually

Background Checks

  • Must include 7 years of residence/work history
  • SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
  • Education Verification
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start

Additional Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years
  • Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days
  • Skills Checklist completed within 12 months and annually
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance forms prior to start
  • Mandatory completion of IU Health RRT modules (if applicable) before orientation

Notes

  • Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at IU Health facilities except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
  • Liver transplant experience is a strict requirement (hard stop)
  • Multi-specialty float required, including all surgeries

This position is ideal for experienced transplant RNs with strong liver transplant skills who are comfortable with call, holiday work, and multi-specialty float assignments.
