Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Specialty: Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical/Oncology (5 South Unit)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour nights; every other weekend required
  • Unit: 29 Bed Unit, Adult Population – Medical and surgical patients battling cancer, palliative care, family education on oncological processes. Includes Urology and Telemetry patients.
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
    • Nights: 5-6 patients per nurse
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty (Medical Surgical/Oncology)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (AHA only, no pending certs allowed)
    • ONCC/ONS certification
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • Chemotherapy Administration (preferred but not required)
  • Skills Required:
    • Telemetry
    • Central Line Draws
    • Ports
    • Blood Administration
    • PCA Pumps
    • Bone Marrow Aspiration Assist
    • Pleurx Chest Tubes
  • Float: Clinician may float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Schedule Flexibility: Open to accommodating blocked schedule requests
  • License: WV or Compact RN License required (pending RN license can be submitted)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours guaranteed
  • Holiday Requests: Limit to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays off

  • Total Staffed Beds: 838
  • Charting System: Cerner
  • Scrub Color: Royal Blue/White (RN)
  • Parking: Free for travelers

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Social Security Card (or proof of request on file)
  • Residency Declaration Form (if working on compact license)
  • 7-year Criminal Background Check within 30 days of start
  • Various federal background checks (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, Sex Offender Search) updated annually
  • Primary Source Verification of State License and NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG, Medication Calculation, Blood Administration) required for nursing candidates
  • Annual skills checklist for specialty required
  • References: Minimum 1 reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start
  • Physical Exam: Completed within 1 year of start, must state candidate is in good health and free from communicable diseases
  • Drug Screen: Within 30 days of start, includes a full panel (Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Cocaine, Opiates, etc.)
  • Annual Fit Mask Testing (N95) required; onsite fit testing may be accommodated if needed
  • Immunizations & Health Requirements:
    • Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically exempt with documentation
    • COVID-19 Vaccine: Not required
    • Tdap, TB test or chest X-ray, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Hepatitis B, Varicella vaccinations or titers required with specific guidelines for boosters and exemptions
  • Vaccination Exemption Forms available for medical or religious reasons (excluding COVID vaccine)

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management
  • Inservice Training modules must be completed 1 week prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
  • Pass/Fail testing is part of inservice training
  • Candidates must submit transcripts or certificates of completion prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Candidates refusing flu vaccine without medical proof will not be accepted during flu season
  • Returning permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility
  • Clinicians must comply with facility dress code and review blood administration policies prior to start
  • PAPR accommodations available if unable to pass fit testing due to facial hair or face shape

This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical/Oncology RNs comfortable with telemetry and oncology-related skills, seeking a travel contract in a major teaching hospital environment with a supportive team and structured orientation.
