Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Indianapolis, Indiana

Job Description

  • Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
  • Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
  • First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BCLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale Certification)

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of specialty experience required.
  • Experience with telemetry, proficient neuro experience, and management of drips.
  • Preferred skills: conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma experience.
  • Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required.

Unit Information

  • Patient types include CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors and resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs, falls), GI surgeries, and large wound care.
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4, rarely 1:5 during emergencies.

Prior Travel Experience

  • Not explicitly required; first-time travelers are accepted.

Important Facility Policies

  • Effective 11/30/24, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at these facilities except for Periop/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).

Required Documents and Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
  • Background checks including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
  • Official transcript or diploma showing degree and graduation date.
  • Education verification by third party.
  • State license verification within 30 days of start.
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam.
  • Unit competency exam.
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent, 100% score required).
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved).
  • Immunizations and titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required), Flu vaccination (required during flu season, no declinations accepted).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles.
  • Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps.
  • Skills checklist within 12 months, completed annually.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, confidentiality, and policy forms.
  • Completion of mandatory RRT modules if applicable (for RRT candidates only).

  • Travelers must be willing to float to different units as needed.
  • Charge nurse duties may be assigned based on operational needs.
  • Travelers must be prepared to precept students.
  • Strict compliance with immunization and health screening policies is required.
  • On-site fit testing is limited and must be approved in advance if needed.
