PCU RN Position - Grand Island, Nebraska

Job Details

  • Specialty: PCU RN (Progressive Care Unit)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1900, 1830-0700)
  • Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: As needed to meet unit needs
  • Floating: May float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care

Experience & Certifications

  • Required Specialty Experience: Minimum 1 year of unit experience
  • Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not specified (assumed not required)

Unit Information

  • Department: Stepdown (PCU)
  • Number of Beds: 33
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
  • Common Patient Diagnoses:
    • Young adults through geriatrics
    • Sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA
    • Patients with complex medical issues including multisystem failure
  • Nursing Duties:
    • RNs required to titrate drips (Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, Insulin)
    • RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips
    • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
  • Support Staff: CNAs with a 1:10 ratio (availability fluctuates based on census)
  • Respiratory Equipment: BiPAP, Airvo

Orientation & Training

  • First week: Classroom orientation
  • Followed by: Two 12-hour shifts on the floor
  • RN skills exam during orientation (open book, must score 90% to pass)

Additional Information

  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
  • Work Environment: Busy patient flow with simultaneous admitting, discharging, and shift change within a 6-hour window
  • Key Attributes for Success: Strong teamwork, positive attitude, engagement in patient experience, commitment to bedside report and hourly rounding
  • Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
  • Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify distance
  • Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination
  • Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved during contract

This position is ideal for a PCU RN with at least 1 year of unit experience, current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
