Job Opportunity: Surgical Technician (Surg Tech - 7010)

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Required Certifications & Licenses

• BLS (AHA) required
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA not required
• Sterile Processing certifications (IAHCSMM or CBSPD) relevant for instrument tech duties
• Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license
• Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission

Experience Requirements

• Prior acute OR experience is a must
• Preferred: prior travel experience in sterile processing (indicates prior travel experience is preferred but not explicitly required)

Work Environment & Unit Details

• Operating Room (OR) with 11 suites: 2 CVOR, 5 Endo suites, and Urology suites
• Cases per day: Main OR 35-40, Endo 20-30, CVOR 1 per day
• EMR system: Picis OR Manager
• Charge nurse coverage varies by shift and time of day
• Scrubbing by RNs is highly preferred; some RNs scrub and hold retractors

Shifts & Scheduling

• Shift lengths: 8, 10, and 16 hours
• Typical staffing: 12 circulators per shift (average 10-11 running rooms and providing breaks)
• Weekend requirement: 1-2 weekend days per month for CSTs and RNs (scheduled or call)
• Call requirement: 1-2 days per month on weekends (Saturday or Sunday, 7A-7A), 45-minute response time
• Call coverage includes trauma and open heart teams; call hours vary by specialty
• Holidays: call sign-up as needed

Common Case Types

• Orthopedic total joint replacements and revisions (must have ortho experience)
• General surgery, colorectal, gynecology, neurology (neuro preferred), ENT, vascular (vascular preferred), thoracic, podiatry (1 day/week)
• Robotic gastric sleeves and advanced endoscopy procedures (ERCP, EUS, resections)

Additional Notes

• Weekend coverage may include main OR or evening endoscopy
• Sterile processing duties involve use of Steris and Sterrad autoclave systems
• Instrument sterilization mostly handled by sterile processing department, separate from OR techs
• Steris NX autoclave operated by orderlies and instrument techs, with coverage M-F 11a-11p and one weekend 24-hour call every 4 weeks

Summary

This is a 13-week surgical tech contract in Wheeling, WV, primarily in a busy OR environment with a variety of surgical specialties. Candidates must have acute OR experience, BLS certification, and be comfortable with weekend and call responsibilities.
