Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Indianapolis, Indiana

Job Description

  • Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
  • Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Local candidates are NOT accepted.
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
  • Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required.
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4, rarely 1:5 during emergencies.
  • Unit patient population includes CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors/resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs), GI surgeries, and large wound care.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of specialty experience (Telemetry, Neuro experience, management of drips).
  • Preferred experience: Conscious Sedation and Level 1 Trauma.
  • Must be proficient in telemetry and neuro patient care.

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
  • BLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM) — verify per unit.

Licensure & Background

  • Valid RN license with online verification within 30 days of start.
  • Background checks required within 30-90 days of start, including:
    • 7-year work/living history
    • SSN trace
    • County, state, and national criminal checks
    • Sex offender registry
    • Education verification
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • Physical exam within 12 months.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved).
  • Immunizations and titers required or strongly recommended:
    • TB test within 1 year
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations)
    • Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (declinations NOT accepted)

Additional Requirements

  • Must agree to possibility of precepting students.
  • Must be willing to float to different units as needed.
  • Must work 50% of weekends.
  • Refusal to float may lead to contract termination.
  • First-time travelers accepted; prior travel experience NOT required.
  • Locals are not accepted.
  • References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years, with supervisory titles.
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months and annually.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules and competency exams required prior to start.
  • Must complete mandatory IU Health RRT modules if applicable (for RRT candidates only).

Facility Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities after 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).

This position requires a flexible, experienced RN comfortable with neuro and telemetry patient care, weekend shifts, floating, and teaching responsibilities in a high-acuity, trauma-informed environment.
