Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN)
  • Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15)
  • Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend; scheduling accommodates requested time off with make-up weekends as needed
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
  • On-call: Not required
  • Patient Ratio: Must be willing to take up to a 1:7 patient ratio if needed (rare)
  • Patient Population: Must be willing to care for trach and laryngectomy patients (experience not required but willingness to learn is mandatory)

Experience & Licensure

  • Required Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required
  • Licensure: Must have an active Illinois RN license in hand to apply

Certifications & Skills

  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PICC line management and IV start experience required
  • Preferred Experience: Cerner electronic charting system
  • Additional Certifications: ACLS, PALS may be required based on unit/specialty

Scheduling & Time Off

  • Manager reviews and approves requests for time off based on unit schedule
  • Only one winter holiday off allowed per contract
  • Guaranteed hours with some allowance for client call-offs

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid/current US Driver’s License or State ID
  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years (including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and federal exclusions)
  • Education verification (degree or transcript)
  • State-specific searches and registries as required by Illinois
  • Physical exam within one year of start, including labs
  • Fit mask test (specific mask types required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within one year
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Competency exam and skills checklist for clinical candidates
  • Photo for badge within one week of contract signing
  • Signed code of conduct and parking permit forms as applicable
  • References: 2 professional references required for clinical candidates

Notes

  • Candidates must be willing to work night shifts and every other weekend
  • Experience with PICC lines and IV starts is mandatory
  • Willingness to care for specialized patients (trach, laryngectomy) is required even if no prior experience
  • Cerner experience preferred but not mandatory
  • Illinois state license must be active and in hand before starting

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of Med Surg experience looking for a travel contract in a Level I trauma, Magnet hospital setting with night shift availability.
