Job Opportunity: Surgical Tech (OR Tech)

Location: Northridge, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Overview

Seeking an experienced OR Tech for a travel contract in a hospital setting. The candidate must have:

• Minimum 2 full years of experience as an OR Tech
• Active BLS certification
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification via NBSTSA

Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) via NBSTSA

Work Environment & Unit Details

• Unit: Operating Room (OR)
• 12 general OR suites, 1 cardiovascular OR (CVOR) suite, and 1 hybrid room
• Average 14 cases per day
• EMR system: Cerner Surginet
• 1:1 staff-to-patient ratio
• Charge Nurse present
• No floating for techs or RNs
• Floor-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts

Shifts & Scheduling

• 8-hour shifts:

  • 6:45am - 3:15pm
  • 2:45pm - 11:15pm
  • 10:45pm - 7:15am
• Weekend call requirements for CSTs: every 4th weekend for 7a-3pm and 3p-11pm shifts; variable for 11p-7a shift
• Weekday call required 4-8 times per 4-week schedule (self-scheduled)
• Call response time: 30 minutes
• Holidays: 1 major and 1 minor holiday in both summer and winter

Case Types & Experience Required

Candidates must have experience with:

• Trauma surgeries
• Orthopedics (total joints)
• General surgery
• Gynecology
• Urology
• ENT
• Plastics (some)
• Vascular
• Neurosurgery
• Robotics (Da Vinci)
• CVOR procedures (open heart, valves, thoracotomy, trauma) are generally not required unless specifically requested

Additional Notes

• Scrubbing is required for CSTs; RNs do not scrub but it is preferred
• The 11p-7a shift has only one RN and one tech, requiring the tech to be very experienced and comfortable working independently
• RT (Respiratory Therapy) and Pharmacy services are available 24/7
• Surgeon is not in-house 24/7; OB anesthesia is in-house 24/7 as needed

Sterile Processing Tech Information (if applicable)

• Certification required through IAHCSMM or CBSPD
• BLS certification required
• Minimum 2 years of sterile processing experience
• Equipment used: Steris, Sterad
• Common sterilization methods: high-level disinfection, VP Plasma, steam sterilization
• Shifts: 8 hours (7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a)
• Call included every other week
• No floating required
