Job Opportunity: RN (Registered Nurse) - PCU

Location: Omaha, Nebraska

Requirements

  • Certifications:

    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • Experience:

    • Specialty years of experience not explicitly stated; assume standard PCU RN experience required.

    • Valid driver's license required at submittal.

Unit Details

  • Department: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Bed Count: 28
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Nurse Aide/Patient Care Tech Ratio: 1:14
  • Common Patient Types: Adults, mixed medical/surgical, cardiac, and stroke patients, often admitted through the ER.
  • Drip Titration: RNs are required to titrate drips such as heparin, octreotide, insulin, and maintenance IV meds.
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments.
  • Tele/Monitor Techs: Available; RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry.
  • Specialty Equipment: Code carts, LUCAS machines, hoyer lift, Sit and Stand devices.

Scheduling & Orientation

  • Shifts:
    • 0630-1900 (day shift)
    • 1830-0700 (night shift)
  • Scheduling Cycle: 6 weeks, managed by unit schedulers.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend.
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotates with permanent staff.
  • Floating: Required to float to Med/Surg and other hospital areas including ICU/ED as appropriate.
  • Orientation:
    • 1 week classroom orientation
    • Followed by 2 twelve-hour shifts on the unit

Additional Notes

  • This is a high-flow unit with frequent admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Teamwork and a positive attitude are essential.
  • Unit secretary available 2-3 days per week; stocking clerk available 3 days per week.
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs.
  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals.
  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and not be employed by CommonSpirit-affiliated facilities.

This position is ideal for experienced PCU nurses comfortable with a fast-paced environment and multiple patient care responsibilities.
