Job Opportunity: Med Surg/Telemetry RN
Location: Quincy, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
Seeking a Med Surg Float RN for a 13-week contract at a hospital in Illinois. The unit is Med Surg/Telemetry, inpatient surgical on the 3rd floor with 48 beds across two buildings.
Unit Details
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-6
- Nights: 1:5-6
- LPNs available
- Virtual admission and discharge nurses assist
- Primary care nursing model frequently used (must be comfortable with this)
Required Certifications
- BLS (AHA)
- NIHSS
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Neuro surgeries: laminectomy, cervical fusion
- LESI (Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection)
- Abdominal surgeries: ostomies, hernia repair
- Joint replacements: total hips/knees
- Vascular: fem-pop bypass
- Dialysis catheter insertions (dialysis unit located on the same floor)
- Amputations: BKA, AKA
- Chronic conditions: diabetes mellitus, sepsis, chronic pain management (narcotics)
- Other: PICC lines, TPN, lipids, PCA pumps, epidurals, IV antibiotics, urgent OR cases
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year surgical experience required
- Must have total joint replacement experience
- Understanding of PCA pumps, reversal drugs (Narcan), sepsis management
- Experience with TPN and lipids
- Familiarity with narcotic usage
Clinical Responsibilities
- RN required to titrate heparin drips per protocol
- RNs interpret telemetry strips (Draeger monitors)
- Tele/Monitor techs present on unit
- Charge nurse usually takes a smaller patient assignment to assist
- Nurse aides available but may be pulled for sitter duties, especially on night shift
- Respiratory therapy manages CPAP, BiPAP (occasionally), Airvo, and ventilators
Scheduling & Shifts
- 3 shifts of 12 hours each, starting at 7 AM
- No guaranteed block scheduling; schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday rotation with core staff
- No call or standby requirements
Floating & Orientation
- Float only to like units; if floated to higher acuity, work as support without patient load
- Orientation: 1 shift (12 hours) on unit of hire plus a first day of 12-14 hours for competencies and general orientation
Additional Information
- Fast-paced environment with heavy patient load
- Can admit 8-12 surgical patients per day and discharge patients simultaneously
- Night shifts are 12 hours
- Dress code: black scrubs
